Harvest - Gorsuch Orchard

Harvest – Sept/Oct 2015

Gorsuch orchard has come a long way since 31/01/2011 when it was planted. We have had our first full harvest and we picked the apples over the last three weeks. The Rajka in particular have been prolific – almost 40 lbs from the 3 trees. We did not weigh the fruit from the Lord Lambourne, James Grieve or Worcester Permain as these trees are still a couple of years behind the Rajkas. One customer bought all the Worcesters in one go and these were only from one tree. The other 2 Worcesters had to be hard pruned (to within an inch of their lives!) three years ago but they have survived and appear to be quite healthy. Last winter one Lord Lambourne decided to curl up its toes and die and the decision was taken not to replant in that particular area. We almost lost one of the Rajkas this autumn too due to the weight of fruit. We did lose one branch but as you can see from the image Clay and I were able to re-stake it before anything serious happened. As of today, 09/10/2015, there are just 7 apples left on the 2 Lord Lambourne trees. We will be checking them next Friday. Come November any mulch around the trees will be cleared away, stakes and ties checked and the cycle will start again in January with winter pruning.
